Grant to Expand Fruit and Vegetable Offering at Schools

Grant to Expand Fruit and Vegetable Offering at Schools

HOUSTON COUNTY, GA – The Houston County School Nutrition is expanding its Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant piloted at Pearl Stephens Elementary last year by adding Lindsey Elementary and Westside Elementary.  This grant provides funds to serve fresh produce in classrooms.  Students last year had the opportunity to taste starfruit, snap peas, jicama and a wide variety of exotic fruits and vegetables as well as items on grocery store shelves.

The overall goal of the program is to expose children to new foods and to teach healthy lifestyle habits.  This year children in three schools will have a chance to try healthy snacks twice a week.  To see the program, visit Lindsey Elementary on a Wednesday or and Friday, around 1:00 p.m.  Lindsey’s children will sample a fruit or vegetable after lunch, with times varying by class.

Operation Back to School in Full Force

School is back in session for most students in just a few weeks. To help children in Central Georgia, 13WMAZ is teaming up with Communities in Schools and Walmart to sponsor Operation Back to School.

A number of 13WMAZ staff members will be in several locations to help collect school supplies.

Operation Back to School is a school supply drive that directly benefits kids in need in our local communities. Through Aug. 18, donation barrels or bins will be located at the front of Walmart stores in Macon, Warner Robins, Forsyth, Perry, Milledgeville and Dublin. We need your help to fill them all up!

Simply pick up a few extra school supplies while you shop and drop them in the barrels on your way out. All supplies go to children in the community in which they are collected.
