Sen. Tolleson Reports from the Capital

Every year, I enjoy visiting with all the bright and talented students from the 20th Senate District who visit the State Capitol.  This week I met with the Youth Leadership of Warner Robbins, a program designed by the local Chamber of Commerce to expose young leaders to the dynamic community and encourage their input and creativity.  Also from Warner Robbins were several members of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) who visited the Capitol during National FCCLA Week to celebrate this student organization that helps young men and women become leaders.   

Sen. Brown Named to Influential Committees

Sen. Robert Brown (D-Macon) has been appointed to several influential committees for the 2011-2012 Term by the Senate Committee on Assignments, a Senate Press Office press release says.

Sen. Brown will serve on the Appropriations, Judiciary, Urban Affairs, Economic Development and Reapportionment committees. He has also been named secretary to the Veterans Affairs Committee.

“I am pleased with the assignments I’ve received and I look forward to working on these important committees to serve the people of the 26th Senate District,” Sen. Brown said.

The 152nd Legislative Session of the Georgia General Assembly convened Monday at the State Capitol.

National Guard Prepares to Support Communities During Winter Storm

This news release was received from the Georgia National Guard and its Media Relations officer, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Ken Baldowski:

In anticipation of an impending winter storm, Guardsmen across Georgia today are preparing equipment and issuing plans to support communities if the Governor orders their mobilization.

"Soldiers and Airmen of the Georgia National Guard stand ready to do our part to help local communities recover, if we are needed," said Maj. Gen. William Nesbitt, Georgia's Adjutant General.

Guardsmen already conducting their monthly drills today prepared humvees, loaded equipment, prepositioned supplies, and updated plans to mobilize, should the Governor call upon them. The Georgia Guard's Joint Forces Headquarters also brought its Joint Operations Center staffing up to operating capacity Sunday in order to monitor the storm and manage any potential response by the National Guard.

Flint Energies Adopts Georgia Work Ready Standard

Beginning Jan. 1, 2011, Flint Energies will adopt the Georgia Work Ready standard that will require all potential job seekers to provide their Work Ready Certificate to make a job application.

“We are thrilled to join the statewide initiative which allows job candidates to prove their value as soon as they apply by using their Work Ready Certificate,” said Flint Energies Sr. Vice President Karen Garza.

According to its website, Georgia Work Ready was created to ensure that Georgia's workers have the best skills, easy access to training and world-class job opportunities. The backbone of the initiative is the Work Ready Certificate, which assesses the real world skills of Georgia's workers.

Dublin Resident Donates to Museum of Aviation

Bob Walker from Dublin, Ga. and Rick Drury, Museum of Aviation Foundation Vice Chairman, recognize Walker’s recent $5,000 donation to the Museum of Aviation Foundation Capital Campaign, a museum release says.

Walker is a member of the Museum of Aviation Foundation Board of Directors and also a member of the Dublin-Laurens Chambers of Commerce and Development Authority.

Local Bank Sponsors Toys for Tots Drive

Robins Federal Credit Union is currently collecting donations for Toys for Tots at branches in the following counties - Baldwin, Bibb, Clarke, Houston, Jones, Monroe and Peach.

Unwrapped toys for children ages birth-14 may be dropped off at these branch locations between now and Dec. 15.
