Georgia Loses to Tennessee in Regional

Georgia fell behind early Thursday afternoon in Game One of the Little League Regional competition and never recovered.  Tennessee won 13-4.

Tennessee combined for four runs in the first inning and roughed up Georgia's pitcher, Aliza Baker.

In the top of the second Tennessee's Abby Harrison hit a shot to deep center field.  She rounded the bases but the umpires called her out at home because she slid into the base head first.  That's against Little League rules.

The Georgia team, from Bartow County, plays again Friday at 10 a.m. against Alabama.

Kathleen Man Killed by Train

A Kathleen man died after being hit by a train late Wednesday night.

Houston County coroner Danny Galpin says investigators are trying to find out if it was an accident or suicide.

He said 24-year-old David Hall died at the scene around 11:30 p.m.

The accident happened behind his home at 866 Highway 247 in Kathleen.

Galpin said Hall argued with his mother and went to sit on tracks behind his home.

He said Hall's brother told him, "There's a train coming, you need to get off the tracks."

David Hall replied, "I'm getting off," just before being hit, according to Galpin.

Galpin said the Houston County sherif's office is investigating.

Gov. Nathan Deal Spends Day in Central Georgia

Gov. Nathan Deal spent Thursday in Central Georgia visiting Robins Air Force Base and later discussing economic development with business and elected officials.

Deal's first stop was at Robins where Maj. Gen. Robert H. McMahon briefed the governor on base operations and took him on a bus tour of the facility.

In a news conference afterwards, Deal said Robins remains a major economic asset for Central Georgia and that the base would be prepared in the event of another base realignments and closures.

"I think we are taking the necessary steps to make sure that if future BRACs (base realignments) come that Georgia will be prepared and that Warner Robins will be protected," Deal said.

From Robins, Deal headed to Macon State College where he fielded questions from area business leaders who were attending an economic development conference.

Warner Robins has State's Lowest Unemployment Rate

Warner Robins ranks with the lowest June unemployment rate in Georgia, recorded at eight percent.

That's according to a Georgia Department of Labor news release.

The highest unemployment rate was recorded in the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha area near Dublin at 12.8 percent.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said today that the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in metro Macon increased to 10.6 percent in June, up six-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 10 percent in May. The jobless rate in metro Macon in June a year ago was 10.5 percent.

“The increase was caused primarily by two seasonal factors,” said Butler. “There were layoffs among non-contract public school employees, such as bus drivers and janitorial workers, and an increase in the labor force, as students began looking for permanent or part-time jobs.”
