McMahon: Sequestration Already Hitting Robins
News

Right now, the former commander of Robins Air Force base will brief community leaders on the effects of sequestration.

That's the massive across-the-board federal budget cuts that would kick in March 1, unless Congress can reach an agreement on the defense spending and automatic cuts.

The session today is sponsored by the 21st Century Partnership, the Warner Robins community group that rallies support for the base.

Various leaders from  business, health and the community are meeting to hear what the defense cuts mean for Central Georgia.

Retired Major General Bob McMahon, who now heads the partnership, has been sounding the alarm for months about what sequestration would mean for the area.

McMahon told the group that our country's biggest threat is not being able to balance budget or reduce the deficit.

He said Robins is already feeling the effects of sequestration with a civilian hiring freeze and elimination of temporary employees. The next step, he added, would be 30 days of furloughs for employees or 22 non-consecutive work days.
