Special Olympics Winter Games Played in Houston County

It's been 10 years since the Winter games of the Special Olympics have been played in Houston county.

Organizers felt it was time to bring some indoor activity to the athletes, while allowing students from all 13 middle and high schools of Houston county to perform.

"We have a group called the local management team that has been working hard for the past several months to get everything together, and they worked really hard to organize the games," said Rebecca Banks, Coordinator of Houston County Special Olympics.

The games included four types of basketball competitions. Athletes tried their skills at individual, team, level A, and 3-on-3 games.

Melissa Scarborough, of Warner Robins, says she's excited that her son is able to take participate in activities that are different from what the summer games offer.

"It's great to have something midyear to get the kids excited and get them physical and have the opportunities as mainstream kids do."

Three winning teams will travel to Atlanta, next weekend, to compete in the state competition.
