Inspectors Found Violations at Warner Robins Day Care

State investigators found numerous health and safety violations at a Warner Robins day care center that was shut down Friday.

They include an incident when a special-needs child somehow wandered out of the building to a Dollar General next door.

Unique Tutoring & Individualized Children Academy on Russell Parkway in Warner Robins has been shut down in an emergency closure by the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning.

"Emergency closures are used by the agency when it is determined that children attending the center are in imminent danger," said Chief Communications Officer Reg Griffin in a statement.

In report from October, DECAL found multiple violations including broken door handles, no lesson plans, and children not washing hands.

In one case, a four-year old with special needs left the classroom and went to the Dollar General store next door.  The same child also wandered into the parking lot on another occasion, and the report said he was left the classroom multiple times.

In another incident, "a staff member was observed to wipe two children's noses with the same tissue and not wash her hands."

Earlier reports from April show employees without criminal records checks on file, unsafe food storage practices, and a violation of required reporting of a medical incident.

We tried to reach the center by phone, but they have not returned our calls.
