Donors in Warner Robins Help Replenish Blood Supply
News

Hurricane Sandy impacted more than power lines and people's homes.

It also knocked out 320 scheduled Red Cross blood drives up and down the east coast.

Some people far away from the storms hardest hit areas want to help make up for the loss.

When the doors opened Monday morning at Warner Robins Christ United Methodist Church in Warner Robins, 187 people had signed up to give blood.

Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative Kristen Keifer said, "This is the biggest blood drive in Warner Robins"

Keifer said by noon, more people willing to donate walked in and waited for their opportunity.

That included Toni Hickman from Warner Robins. She said, "Every three months that they have it, I'm giving blood."

She has donated at least 20 times now, knowing her one pint could help save three lives and replenish low reserves after Hurricane Sandy.

Shari Crumley, a reservist at Robins Air Force Base, gives regularly, too.

She heard that cancelled blood drives and more demand for blood after Sandy, depleted at least 12,000 blood and platelet products.

Crumley said, "I just feel like if we needed blood that somebody else would take the time and donate what they have. I think it's important."

Keifer expected at least 124 pints to come from Monday's drive, and that's a lot. She said it's about five times more than the average drive in the Macon and Warner Robins area.

Keifer said, "This blood drive is highly successful."

The Red Cross blood services center in Macon is located at 3755 Bloomfield Drive, Suite E and F. Blood donor center hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
