The Houston County sheriff's department says two men are in the jail after trying to burglarize a home. They say one even tried to poison the homeowner's dog.
According to a release from the Houston County sheriff's department, the homeowner returned to his house on Peachtree Boulevard around lunchtime Tuesday and saw a man running away from the back of the house.
Investigators determined that someone had broken in and stolen items. Houston County canine units tracked the suspect's route and found the items taken from the house.
Deputies noticed a suspicious van in the area with two men and a woman inside. That led to the arrest of 31-year-old Donald Gauthier and 25-year-old Benjamin Salter, Jr.
The investigation also revealed that Gauthier tried poisoning the homeowner's dog during the burglary.
Both Gauthier and Salter are charged with conspiracy to commit burglary. Gauthier is also charged with cruelty to animals.
