Wadsworth Named Houston County Teacher of the Year | News

With only four years of teaching under his belt, teacher Larry Wadsworth became Houston County's 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year.

He calls himself a "math nerd", with a passion for learning anything and everything.

Wadsworth moved into a new job this school year, although he earned the award for his work in the classroom last year.

He is now a curriculum integration specialist, which means he teaches other teachers how to use new classroom technology.

Wadsworth says he misses being at Warner Robins High School, where the taught Math and AP Computer Science, but he feels like he can help more students, by helping their teachers use technology.

This month, he is traveling to different schools to make sure smart boards are working. Next month, he will train on them on how to use them.

Wadsworth said, "You've got to teach people another way of looking at this board in front of the classroom, and not just using it as a projector and markers, but as a center of classroom function. Training teachers on that will allow other teachers to have the kind of success I've had in the past couple of years."

He says he took the new job, because it will allow him more flexibility than as a classroom teacher.

Wadsworth says he needs the flexibility, because he and his wife are expecting twin boys in November.

He will be entered into the Georgia Teacher of the Year contest, competing with nominees from systems around the state.

The winner is announced in May.
