While players, parents, umpires and coaches gathered for a special dinner at the Museum of Aviation Wednesday night, the diamond they would play on Thursday was getting some finishing touches.
The grass at the Souteastern Regional field comes from Tifton. It is a fine Bermuda that the crews keep nicely trimmed.
"It's very very tolerant. It just needs constant mowing because it does grow very rapidly," explained Southeastern Regional Director Jenn Colvin. "The way the grass blades are, the top part maintains the green color."
The grass will get its first test Thursday at 10 a.m. when South Carolina takes on West Virginia.
Georgia will hit the field for the first time on Thursday at 7 p.m. against North Carolina.
