Early Wednesday, instead of setting up to celebrate the Fourth of July, residents displaced by fire were salvaging furniture from the ruins of their apartment complex.
A fire Tuesday night destroyed at least one building at the Sandpiper Apartments on Leisure Lake Drive in Warner Robins, according to reports from the scene.
There were 24 units in the building. Fire officials say everyone escaped safely. The Red Cross says it is assisting families displaced by the fire.
Three fire units answered the call around 7 p.m. Flames could be seen shooting over the tops of trees from across Wilkinson Lake.
The apartment complex is on the lake, south of Russell Parkway and west of Moody Road. According to real estate listings, the complex has 530 units.
