Handcuffed man accused of stealing Houston deputy's cruiser
News

A Florida man is in Houston County jail after a deputy said he stole his cruiser Saturday afternoon.

The suspect, 21-year-old Seth Ray Stewart, was handcuffed - behind his back - when he allegedly took the car.

Capt. Ronnie Harlowe told 13WMAZ that just after 1 p.m. Saturday, Deputy Brett Sanders pulled Stewart and another man over on I-75 for speeding.

"He'd stopped a violator for 87 in a 70. He got the vehicle stopped and there was also a passenger in that vehicle," he said.

Sanders found evidence of drugs in the car and arrested the two men, Harlowe said.

He cuffed them both behind their backs.

"After they had been placed in the patrol car, the deputies continued on with their search of the violators vehicle," Harlow said, "And while they were doing that, they noticed that the patrol car had fled the scene."

Stewart managed to crawl from the backseat of the patrol car through the open partition to the front seat.

He then drove off.

He got about 5 miles down the road before ditching the car and running away on foot.

Deputies caught up to him about 30 minutes later, Harlowe said.

Stewart and the other man arrested, 24-year-old Kimon Miller of Miami, Florida, are both in the Houston County jail, facing multiple charges.

Stewart is charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, and criminal trespass.

Miller is charged with permitting an unlicensed person to drive and possession of marijuana.

Harlowe says the incident is still being investigated.

He said there is no policy against deputies leaving the partition between the front and back seat of the patrol car open. Harlowe said the deputy left it open so the suspects could get cool air in the back seat of the car.

Another deputy involved is identified as Shane Broome.

Both officers are still employed by the department.
