Ga. National Guard Engineers Deploy to Afghanistan | Military

Some Central Georgia Army National Guardsmen are among those deploying to Afghanistan Friday.

The 878th Engineer Battalion is based in Augusta, but it includes guardsmen from all over the state, including Milledgeville, Warner Robins, and Vidalia.

According to a statement from the Georgia Army National Guard, "the unit will protect coalition forces and Afghan civilians by conducting route clearance operations to locate and disarm potential explosive devices."

The 878th will be in Afghanistan for a year.
