Job Fair Aims to Help Veterans | Military

In this economy, finding a job can be a hard task. Factor in the added challenge of transition for military service into the civilian workplace and it a present additional challenges.

 In 2011 alone, the unemployment rate among veterans was 12.1 percent, which was 4 percent higher than the national average for non-veterans.

It's one of the reasons CivilianJobs.com sponsored a job fair designed exclusively for veterans at Robins Air Force Base, which drew hundred of military members seeking new jobs.

Elfreda Crawford served at Robins and is now looking for a job in the field of logistics when she retires from the Air Force. 

Michael Tidwell is retiring as a Tech Sergeant and says the job hunt can be "something to stress about."

 One of the main assets employers say service members bring to the job is their sense of discipline and work ethic.  Scott Garner of Five Star Auto in Warner Robins says some of his best sales representatives were people who previously served in the military.

One tip the Department of Labor offered to veterans is to make sure not to use jargon or military lingo in resumes so employers can understand their skill sets.  They also said health, medicine, sales, manufacturing, and technology are popular fields for veterans to enter.
