Athlete of the Week: Kara Walker | HS Sports
When you think of fall sports, you may conjure up an image of football or maybe softball or cross country, but one Warner Robins athlete wants you to put volleyball on that list.
Kara Walker is an imposing figure on the volleyball court, leading the Demonettes toward another postseason run.
Coach Tracy Davis-Fendley says, "She's basically the coach on the floor. She makes the tough decisions, she dictates where the ball goes. It can sometimes be the hardest spot on the floor, and depending on the passes she might get, she has to run a lot more than the other players. She's everywhere, she's a hustler. She's all over the place."
Walker says, "The speed of the sport, definitely. I tried softball, wasn't my thing. I was very slow. Then I tried volleyball. You're always on your feet, especially in the setter position. I am always moving. That's why I love it."
Walker is a senior on the squad and would like to see the sport she loves continue to evolve over the years.
"I hope it will be popular, and I know it can be. I know several schools that a really good high school team because they have a team at the middle school working their way up to high school," says Walker.
On game day, it's hard not to spot Walker giving her best at any cost.
"I say I'm a vocal leader, but that sometimes gets me in trouble, but try to lead by example. I try to score points with serves or just being smart on the court, I guess. Showing my teammates that if they mess up how you can do something right. I try," she says.
Off the court, Walker is just as aggressive sporting a 3.6 GPA and two AP math classes.
Coach says, "That's just her personality. She's a high achiever and she's going to work hard at everything she does. She sets high expectations and does everything she can to reach them,"
