Presenting: HCBOE Retirees

 The Houston County School System will honor 60 retirees at a Retirement Banquet Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. at the Agricenter's McGill Marketplace in Perry.  About 1,000 employees and retirees’ guests are expected to attend. 

Musical entertainment will be provided by the Perry High School Jazz Band, directed by Andy Hursey, and Perry High students, siblings Madeline and Wil Dannenberg.  Dinner will be served and each retiree will be awarded a plaque for their years of service.  A keepsake program and slideshow will highlight each of the honorees.

The event is sponsored by the Houston County schools, Parrish Construction Group, H.E.A. Federal Credit Union and Clear Concepts Consulting Group.  The honorees are listed below. 

 

BOE Names Perdue Elem. Principal

 

The Houston County Board of Education appointed Shawn Carpenter as principal of David Perdue Elementary School at the Board meeting held May 10, 2011. 

Currently, she serves as the assistant principal for instruction (API) at Mossy Creek Middle School, a Houston County Board of Education news release says.

“I am blessed and thankful to be named principal of Perdue Elementary,” said Carpenter.  “My anticipation of working with these students and parents, teachers and staff, and the community excites me.  My goal is to serve the school community and provide high quality learning experiences for our children while reaching new heights in this new era at David Perdue Elementary School."

Relay for Life

Houston County's Relay for Life is set for May 13 at National Fairgrounds and Agricenter.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 127 teams were registered.

Museum Hosts Youth Astronaut Day

 

This year’s Museum of Aviation Young Astronauts’ Day on Saturday, May 14 will feature a live hook-up with a U.S. space program official at The Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. 

That's according to a Museum of Aviation news release.

National Aeronautic and Space Administration Education Specialist Scott Anderson will be live on big screens in the Century of Flight Hangar talking to and taking questions from over 500 1st-8th grade attendees. 

The hook-up will take place during the opening ceremony from 9:25am- 10:25am.   Anderson will demonstrate some of the equipment used aboard the International Space Station in a presentation called “Toys in Space.” 

Major General Bob McMahon, Commander, Warner Robins Air Logistics Center at Robins Air Force Base, will address the students on the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Things to do in Byron GA: Battle of Byron

Middle Georgia residents, come on out to Jailhouse Park and Main Street in Byron GA this Saturday (May 7th) for the annual Battle of Byron.  This family fun event was started in 1979 to help spur community improvements and has morphed into a wonderful city wide affair.

When they say there is something for everyone, they mean it.  Events include:
