Bonaire Middle FCCLA Member Wins National Award | Families
HOUSTON COUNTY, GA – Bonaire Middle School rising seventh-grader Kaitlyn Rudziak won a Silver medal at the national Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competition. The event was held in July in Orlando. Kaitlyn won the award in the Entrepreneurship Jr. category. She is pictured with her Entrepreneurship display.
The FCCLA Entrepreneurship event recognizes participants who develop a plan for a small business using Family and Consumer Sciences skills and sound business practices. The business must relate to an area of Family and Consumer Sciences education or related occupations. Participants must prepare a portfolio containing a written business plan and an oral presentation.
Kaitlyn’s business plan was for her own business, Kaitlyn’s Kupcakes. Earlier in the year she won the national Otis Spunkmeyer O-riginals Recipe Contest. She created an original recipe using the Otis Spunkmeyer Butter Sugar frozen cookie dough. She named her confection "Raspberry Chocolate Delight." While at the conference, she and her chapter adviser, Alice Mullis, received awards for the recipe contest. Each was awarded an iPad plus up to $500 for conference expenses.
More than 6,800 nationwide members, advisers, alumni, and guests of FCCLA attended the 2012 National Leadership Conference. This year’s student-originated theme was “realitycheck.” Throughout the five-day convention, participants discussed critical issues such as violence prevention, physical and financial fitness, careers and community service projects. FCCLA is a student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education.
