The Perfect Christmas Gift: Presence over Presents
The Perfect Christmas Gift: Presence over Presents

What’s on your Christmas gift list this year? Lots of toys, clothes, other assorted stuff? In 10 years do you think you or your family will remember what gifts you received or gave in 2015? Probably not. I believe you need to give presence instead of presents.

I think the most perfect Christmas gift that we can give is the gift of time, more specifically the gift of our presence. This is the gift we will remember for years to come. For our 20th wedding anniversary my husband and I decided to take our children on a European vacation to Paris, Florence and Rome. It was a wonderful trip filled with memories that we all will cherish for the rest of our lives. If my husband had given me a piece of jewelry or some other material gift for that anniversary, I’m quite positive that it wouldn’t have been as memorable as that trip.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson once said “Your children need your presence, more than your presents.” This is more important than ever in our consumeristic, technology obsessed culture, where a dinner out as a family ends with everyone looking at their devices. How can you give the gift of time and presence this year?

  • Take the family out to a nice dinner, no electronics allowed! Have a conversation and get reacquainted.
  • On Christmas morning, don’t worry about getting your Christmas pictures on Facebook or Instagram. Instead spend that time enjoying your family.
  • Give your loved one a gift certificate for a cooking class or something else you can enjoy together.
  • Take the money you would have spend on presents and take your family on a vacation. Get away and make some memories.
