Organize Your Digital Photos: File Away
Organize Your Digital Photos: File Away

You’ve purged the bad, the duplicate and the fuzzy shots and downloaded your digital photos to your computer, now what do you do?

One of the first steps is to decide where you are going to store your photos on your computer (and be sure to download them to the same location every time!). For most people the logical place is your “My Pictures” or “Pictures” file. But if you dump all of your photos into one big file, it will be next to impossible to find that super funny shot of your son with a Lego up his nose. Just think if you just threw all of your papers in a filing cabinet without putting them in filing cabinets. Yikes!

Within your main picture file you should have folders and how you label them are up to you. I have a folder for every year (2014, 2013, 2012, etc.) and within every year I have a folder for every month (1-2014, 2-2014, 3-2014, etc.). This is a pretty easy process to do at the beginning of the year so your files are just waiting for the pictures.

When I download my photos, which I try to do on a regular (at least monthly) basis, I can download that month’s photos into the correct dated file.  Now if I want to find my vacation pictures from last year’s Spring Break, I can at least go to the 4-2014 file even if I haven’t renamed my photos yet.

Tomorrow we’ll talk about how to name your photos for easy retrieval.
