Men's Civilian Firearms Training Classes Offered

The Warner Robins Police Department is offering basic handgun classes for men later this month.  There are three sessions to each class.  
Participants must attend all three classes.  
Topics include Georgia law relating to private ownership and carry of handguns, handgun safety, handgun selection and maintenance, and the basics of shooting a handgun. 
Class Dates:
January 28 & January 30 – 6:00 P.M – 8:30 P.MFebruary 1 – 8:00 A.M. – Noon

Each student must bring a handgun of good quality and proper caliber, 50 rounds of ammunition, and eye and ear protection.  This is a basic class designed for the individual with little to no experience with handguns.  
The classes are free to participants.

Recycle your Christmas tree in Houston County in exchange for a free tree seedling.

On Saturday, you can bring your Christmas tree to be chipped into mulch at Flint Energies on Maple Street from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. if you want a free tree seedling, according to a news release.

If you do not want the seedling, you can drop your tree off at Maple Street anytime after Christmas.

Flint Energies awards $20,000 in Bright Ideas grants to teachers

Flint Energies and its philanthropic arm, the Flint Energies Foundation awarded a total of $20,000 to teachers for creative and innovative lesson plans in the eighth year of the co-op’s Bright Ideas program.

Winning teachers were surprised in their classrooms by the Bright Ideas Prize Brigade representatives from Flint Energies with flowers, balloons, gift bags and “big” checks on November 5 and 12 and December 11.  The Bright Ideas program distributes grants of up to $1,000 for teachers to implement creative, innovative projects or lessons with students.  The grants are not available for professional development or SmartBoard or iPad requests.

This year $20,000 in Bright Ideas grants were given to 23 winning teachers and their team members at schools in Houston, Crawford, Marion, Schley, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, and Upson counties.

DNR aims to increase quail population

DNR aims to increase quail population

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says they hope a partnership with numerous organizations in the state will boost the quail population.

Earlier this evening several groups signed the Georgia Bobwhite Quail Technical Team Memorandum of Agreement.

It's a mouthful, but what it means is that, DNR will provide free help to farmers or land owners that want to tailor their landscape to make it more quail friendly.

  • Twin Oaks Fun Farm, Monroe County. Features pumpkins and a corn maze. 
  • Our Cotton Pickin' Christmas Tree Farm, Hawkinsville. Check their Facebook page for updates.Pick your own pumpkin from the patch. Also enjoy cider or cocoa on the porch while the kids climb the hay mountain. Open 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
