BMS wins state for FFA Junior Poultry Judging | Community Spirit
HOUSTON COUNTY, GA – The Bonaire Middle School FFA Poultry Judging Team won first place at the State FFA Junior Poultry Judging Career Development Event (CDE) held in Athens, Ga. the end of March. Bonaire’s team consists of (pictured, from left): Ryan McDuffie, Paetan Kimball, Jake Bourke and Sydney Smith. Cheralyn Keily serves as their agricultural teacher and FFA advisor.
Bonaire Middle placed first out of 12 teams - seven from middle schools and five ninth-grade high school teams. Forty-seven students competed at State. Ryan won third high individual, Jake was eighth and Paetan won fifteenth. Bonaire’s team placed at the Area III CDE to qualify for State. At the Area competition, Jake won second high individual, Ryan won fourth and Paetan placed tenth.
The Jr. Poultry Judging CDE tests the students’ skills in judging, placing, grading and identifying live birds, carcasses, eggs, poultry parts, chicken patties, and nuggets or tenders. During the competition, students complete the following 10 activities:

*4 Egg Type Hens for Placing
*10 Chicken or Turkey Carcasses for Grading
*4 Chicken or Turkey Carcasses for Placing
*10 Eggs for Interior Quality Grading
*15 Eggs for Exterior Quality Grading
*Exterior Egg Quality Grading
*10 Further Processed Boneless Chicken Products for Quality Evaluation
*10 Further Processed Bone In Chicken Products for Quality Evaluation
*10 Chicken Carcass Parts for Identification
