HOUSTON COUNTY, GA – The Perry and Robins Regional and Chambers of Commerce will host the annual Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Student and STAR Teacher recognition program on Feb. 5, 2014, at 5:30 p.m.  The program and reception will be at Central Georgia Technical College in Building A’s auditorium. During the program, STAR students and their teachers will be recognized, and the district winner will be announced for the first time.

The 2014 STAR Students and Teachers from the Houston County School System are:

  • Houston County High:  Willa M. Wang and teacher Sherin Hinnant;
  •  Northside High:  Hunter Riley Craft and teacher Patricia Ogletree;
  • Perry High:  Jacob Allen Turner and teacher Debra Anderson;
  • Veterans High:  Emily Megan Deyton and teacher Jeremy William
  • Warner Robins High:  Brendan Kennedy and teacher Louis Leskosky.

Each honoree will be presented an engraved gift, and the system STAR Student and Teacher will each be given a $250 gift card.  The system STAR Student and Teacher will attend the Region STAR banquet on Mar. 25, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. in Macon at Middle Georgia State College.  The region winner would next attend the state banquet held in Atlanta.  The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education sponsor the STAR Program.

The STAR program was created to focus attention on Georgia's outstanding students and teachers.  To obtain the nomination, students must have the highest score in one sitting on the SAT taken through the November test date of their senior year.  Students must also be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class.  Each STAR student selects a STAR teacher who has been the most influential in his or her academic success.  STAR students compete for system, region and state-level awards.

Central Georgia Technical College is located at 80 Cohen Walker Drive in Warner Robins.  For more information about the STAR event, please call Aura Lee Durham at the Robins Region Chamber of Commerce at 478-922-8585.
