WARNER ROBINS, GA- The Robins Regional Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon in celebration of the 2012 Leadership Robins Region’s class project, Helping Houston Housing.
"As a class, we wanted to make sure we provided resources based on the needs of the community,” said LRR class member, Dairlyn Brown. “Before we finalized our plans for the 3H project, we contacted the Housing Authority to ask them what their needs were.”
Brown says that the Housing Authority identified areas of necessitate, including the need for computer labs for the residents and the desire for shutters to be installed for a housing area to enhance curb appeal.
“We worked with the Houston County Housing Authority to provide technology support in 3 different housing areas: Merry B. Terry, Jimmy Rosenberg and Kathleen Bynum.” Brown said. “Three computers with added software and one printer were installed in each of the locations.”
The computer labs provided access for residents to enhance life skills including creating resumes, applying for jobs, accomplishing homework and completing assignments as needed.
“The computer labs will benefit the entire family,” said Tess Harper, another LRR class member. “This project will allow residents that may not have a computer to have up to date, timely and speedy information without having to leave the comfort of their home environment.”
Shutters were also installed at the Merry B. Terry location to enhance curb appeal. “Once the shutters were installed we instantly saw a difference in the before and after appearance of the outer building,” said Michelle Kopsick, also a member of the LRR class. “The shutters provide a contrast, which enhances the overall appearance of the buildings. They look awesome!”
Brown reiterated that the project first and foremost “is an asset to the residents of the housing areas and an asset to the economic development of Robins Region.” Brown, along with the entire LRR class, also showed appreciation for the many businesses that had a hand in getting the project completed. “We could not have done this without our sponsors,” she said, “so we want to thank our sponsors, Flint Energies, Cox Communications, Chick-fil-A, 13WMAZ and CDO Technologies.”
