HoCo Bears Prepare for Final Four

The Houston County boys' soccer team is continuing to make history this spring. At 20-0, it is the most wins in a season for the AAAAA school. Wednesday, they will play in the school's first ever final four against Starr's Mill.
Third year head coach Jason Kirk has guided the Bears to their undefeated season and needs only one more win to launch the black and silver into the 5A championship game. Eight seniors have helped the Bears dominate in playoff contention, outscoring opponents by 9 goals through three games. Kirk says he feels this team is on the verge of something special.
"Everyone knows Stars Mill is a soccer powerhouse and we're kind of the new guys in this fight", says Kirk. "It's our first time so we're playing with house money. Our personal goal is of course to win state but since we've made the final four, we have the monkey off our back so now were playing with house money."

Pentagon to Cut Civilian Furlough Days

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. military officials say the Defense Department leaders trying to find ways to deal with mandatory budget cuts are poised to trim the number of civilian furlough days from 14 to 11 and allow the military to exempt thousands of additional workers from the unpaid day off requirements.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is expected to announce a decision on the hotly contested issue as early as Tuesday afternoon when he meets with defense department personnel in Virginia.

The Pentagon is expected to let the Navy avoid furloughs for tens of thousands of workers at shipyards, where they make up the bulk of the workforce and are key to keeping production lines going.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the decisions.

Veterans Soccer, Baseball enjoying Spring Success

Veterans High School has two teams to cheer on in the spring postseason.

The Lady Warhawks soccer program punched their ticket to the final four, while the baseball team is closing in on the semi finals. Led by first year head coach Whitney Wallis, the girls are in the final four for the first time in the schools 4-year existence. Wallis adds, "I think we just have to come out and play the best game that we can play. They are a hard competitive team and we're looking for opportunity for a second shot playing them. So as long we come out and play our A game, I think we'll be ok."

The Lady Warhawks are dominated by 13 sophomores who are pushing the drive on the pitch. Tuesday night the Hawks face Columbus, a team they lost to earlier this season 4-3 in overtime.
