State Board Rules on Brett Evans Case

The Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council made a decision today on Mayor Chuck Shaheen's complaint against Warner Robins Police Chief Brett Evans.

That's according to POST council member, Tom McMichael.

McMichael confirmed a decision had been made, but said the decision itself would not become public for 10 days.

McMichael said, "A lot of hours have been spent on that situation."

McMichael who is also a Houston County Commissioner said he recused himself from the investigation and the decision, because his ties to both Evans and Shaheen.

Shaheen filed the request for POST to investigate Evans last August.

The form asked for the agency to look at allegations of "ticket fixing" and a grand jury's concerns about the investigation of the former mayor's death.

Catholics Hang Up Cell Phones for Lent

Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, and the first day of a new pledge to give up cell phone use while driving for some Kathleen Catholics.

Lent is the roughly 40 days before Easter, in which many Christians make a sacrifice for Jesus.

It's a time for people to repent of their sins and abstain from worldly pleasures.

At St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Kathleen, their Knights of Columbus chapter wants to lead the congregation and the community in giving up their cell phones while driving.

They say the idea was inspired by a tragedy that affected one of their member's family. A close family friend died in accident, while talking on a cell phone.

Houston Schools to Grow Farm Program

More than 1,000 Houston County students are expected to take part in agriculture programs next year, with the addition of two new school farm programs.

Agriculture Education director Barbara Wall said this year 956 students are involved in the classes, raising dairy cows and growing plants.

Houston County, Northside and Perry High schools all have their own school farms, located on school property.

Veterans and Warner Robins High will add their own next year.

Ag students at Houston County High said every student should have the opportunity to take those classes.

Senior Ryan Powell said, "It really takes you places you have never been. The people you get to meet and the experiences you learn are like no other."
