Russell Parkway Reopens After Bomb Scare

Russell Parkway is now reopened after being closed for about 90 minutes due to a bomb scare.

Police spokeswoman Tabitha Pugh says, just before 5 p.m., a man called Houston County 911 and claimed there was a bomb at the Ole Times Country Buffet.

She said the call was made on a pre-paid untraceable cell phone.

Police evacuated the restaurant and called for a bomb-sniffing dog from the Houston sheriff's department. No bomb was found.

Pugh said Russell Parkway was blocked off between Tyree Drive and Corder Road but reopened around 6:30 p.m.

She said the threat remains under investigation.

The Perry High School Student Council will wrap up a book drive next week in conjunction with National Library Week.  The students collected books for the school system’s Read and Feed summer book mobile project.  (Details about the Read and Feed are provided in the PSA shown below.)  Perry High’s book drive resulted in about 500 books to contribute to the project.

In addition, the high school students used a Web site to identify the level of each book and have labeled and sorted the books accordingly.  A few of Perry High’s students are pictured working on the books.?

Lake Joy Elementary will receive the books to add to the collection.   Rhonda Walters, media specialist, sponsored this project.  Perry High School is located at 1307 North Avenue Drive in Perry.  Dr. Darryl Albritton serves as principal.

Making Cold Processed Lye Soap

Making Cold Processed Lye Soap

This is my husband Dan making a soap video for a bunch of guys on his local forum.  In this video he is showing the process of mixing lye and water together.  Please be mindful and respect the lye.  It is a caustic soda and it will burn you if not properly handled.

(In the Mossy Creek Soap Studio we teach you how to properly handle the lye) But for right now you will need a face mask, chemical gloves, eye protection and we suggest closed toed shoes as well before you ever open the container.

If you would like to see more go to our website and check out the completed processes in making Lye Soap.

And if you're interested in learning more about making soap as a hobby or as a new business consider taking classes in our Studio at the Mossy Creek Soap Studio, located at 4501 Russell Parkway, Suite 6 in Warner Robins.

Houston Students Sell Designs at Market Day

About 230 students from 20 Houston County elementary schools came to market Wednesday at the Museum of Aviation.

The second, third and fourth grade students designed their own products for the annual Market Day event.

9-year-old Griffin Peavy from Lake Joy Elementary School made magnets that looked like little bugs. She glued googly eyes on all of them, and placed feathers on some.

Griffin set-up a booth with a sales sign and prices for each magnet.

Her mother Holly helped. She said, "She has learned to market a product and how to sell the product. She learned you have to spend money to make money."

Other students at the show sold "magic" boxes, decorative rocks, jewelry, and other items, in exchange for currency. The students also designed the paper money used to buy their products.

"Yellow Ribbon" Event Explains Military Benefits

Capt. Mia Jacobs says life's been stressful the last two weeks since her husband Charles deployed to support the operation Odyssey Dawn in Libya.

"I'm so used to having him there helping me," Jacobs says.

The mother of two has been in the military for 26 years, but for the first time is eligible for benefits that come with having a spouse who is deployed.

"It's overwhelming. There's too much stuff out there actually," says Jacobs.

She plans to attend Saturday's Yellow Ribbon Expo -- an event she says comes just in the nick of time.

Military officials say the event will be a "one-stop shop," where 26 organizations catering to military families will answer questions.

"The focus is those who have deployed, are deployed currently, and those who are going to deploy," says Col. Bill Welsh, with the 116th ACW.
