Rep. Scott Votes 'No' on Debt Deal

Rep. Austin Scott, the Republican Eighth District congressman who represents much of Central Georgia, voted against the debt-ceiling agreement approved by the House Monday night.

In a statement e-mailed from his office, Scott said: "While this bill included some of the main principles of my preferred "Cut, Cap and Balance" bill it did not include enough of them. "

Scott said he rejected the compromise agreement because it did not require passage of a constitutional balanced-budget amendment before a second debt-ceiling hike, and cut too deeply into defense spending, "to the exclusion of other areas that are the true drivers of our national debt."

Suspect in Huddle House Standoff Sentenced to Prison

The woman who threatened a fellow Huddle House employee with knives and set off a police standoff was sentenced Monday to 20 years' supervision, including eight years in the state penitentiary.

Christina Robbins, 46, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of false imprisonment and one count of aggravated assault, according to Houston County District Attorney George Hartwig.

Kidnapping charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement.

On September 22, police surrounded a Huddle House restaurant on Russell Parkway after Robbins threatened Lisa Young with two knives, tied her to a chair and vandalized the restaurant.

Police had to use a flash grenade to take Robbins into custody inside the restaurant after a standoff.

Child Left in Car Died of Heat Stroke

An autopsy found that a 3-year-old Warner Robins boy died of heat stroke Sunday after he was left in a hot car, police said Monday.

The victim was identified as Andrew Calloway of Warner Robins.

Police spokeswoman Tabitha Pugh said it happened outside a home at 100 Georgetown Boulevard, which is off of Smithville Church Road.

A news release says the child was found unconscious by Shelia Henderson, who had arrived at the home in the car with another adult and two other children.

When she couldn't find the child inside the house she went outside and found him in the car. She called 911 for help.

The boy was pronounced dead at Houston Medical Center.

No charges have been filed, but Pugh said the case is under criminal investigation.

Setting Your Child Up for Success This School Year

Setting Your Child Up for Success This School Year

As the summer break draws to a close, parents and children across Middle Georgia are going through the pre-school rituals of buying backpacks and school supplies and wondering what the new school year will bring.  The crazy routine of back-to-school can derail even the most organized, stable household.  Taking a little time now can help set your stellar student up for success this school year.

Create Routines

Does your child do his homework as soon as he gets home or does he zone out by watching TV and playing video games before doing his homework?  Find what works for your child and stick to it.  Morning routines are also important to be sure everyone gets out of the house on time and with a bare minimum of bedlam.  The night before lay out clothes, pack the lunch boxes and be sure the backpacks are packed up and ready to go including all completed homework assignments.
